A: Mom, I need to go back-to-school shopping! I have nothing to wear on the first day of school, and I need a computer to do my homework.

 

B: You have a whole closetful of clothes that I haven’t seen you wear. And, if you make a contribution with the money you made at your summer job, we can talk about the computer.

 

A: The clothes in my closet! I can’t wear those!  All my friends are getting completely new fall wardrobes. And you seriously expect me to buy my own computer!! How much money do you think the movie theater paid me?

 

B: Well, maybe if you had saved your money like we talked about, you’d be able to buy all those things you want. I’ll take you to Walmart on Saturday and you can get school supplies and one or two items of clothing.

 

A: Walmart? You want me to buy clothes at Walmart? And what about a computer, I need that for school… you’re being so unfair! I’m going to talk to Dad.

 

B: Talking to your dad won’t help. Money does not grow on trees, young lady, and you need to learn the value of each dollar. Now, I need to go back to work, and you need to finish your required summer reading!

Weight Loss

 

A: I really need to lose some weight. I can’t fit into any of my pants, and I get out of breath just by walking up a flight of stairs. It’s pathetic.

 

B: Well, have you tried exercising and watching what you eat? I’ve been going to the gym four times a week for a couple years and it’s made a huge difference.

 

A: I don’t have time to go to the gym. I sit in front of the computer all day—by the time I get home I’m too tired to do anything but eat and watch TV.

 

B: You have to make the time. Taking care of your body requires discipline, but it’s totally worth it in the end. Go to the gym before work and you’ll have so much more energy throughout the day.

 

A: I know you’re right, but I wish I could take some magic pill or get liposuction. I don’t even know where there’s a gym in this neighborhood.

 

B: How about this:  I can get you a week-long pass to my gym and you can try it out. We can go together.

Senior Year of College

 

A: I can’t believe this is my last year of college. I’m supposed to get a job for next year and yet I still have no clue what I want to do with my life.

 

B: You’ll figure it out, and you’re young—you still have plenty of time to explore different options. Look at me; I took a couple years off before pursuing my career.

 

A: But you majored in Economics and now you’re on Wall Street—that makes sense. I’m an art history major: What can I do with that degree?

 

B: It doesn’t matter as long as you’re happy and doing what you love. Besides, I know plenty of people whose degrees have nothing to do with the jobs they took after school.

 

A: I guess I’ll take things one step at a time. I’m really enjoying my Journalism classes. Who knows? Maybe I’ll become a reporter. Let’s not talk about this anymore though-- it’s stressing me out.

 

B: Okay. Let’s go grab a bite to eat and watch the ballgame. Who do you think is going to win? My bet’s on the Yankees.

A: Well, you’re welcome to bring your girlfriend along if you want to drive out and meet me on Sunday. It’s only an hour away—I’m probably going to have a barbecue and we can go sailing or play miniature golf—whatever you guys want.

 

B: That does sound like a lot of fun. I’ve never been sailing, but I’d love to learn.  And if the waves are any good, we should go surfing!

A:   “So, how was your date Saturday night? 

Did you have a good time?”

 

B:   “It was OK.  My date was coming down with a cold, plus she was getting a sore throat.”

B:   “We were watching a movie, and she ran out of tissues.

So when she went to the washroom, she had to use paper towels.

I told her I had to get something from my car, and slipped out.

Then I hopped into my car and bought her some cough drops, and some Kleenex.

For the rest of the night, she kept telling me how “romantic” I was.

A:   “Romantic? How the heck is Kleenex romantic?

I don't think I will ever understand women.”

 

B:   “Exactly. I brought her flowers on the first date-- but Kleenex and cough drops are more romantic?! Women are weird!”

 

Making conversation at parties

 

A:   “I have to go a company cocktail party tonight.

I hate these social events. 

You have to make conversation with all the different people, even the ones you don’t know very well..

I get so tongue-tied.”

 

B:   “I know what you mean. 

I’m not very good at small talk either.

I always end up talking about the weather.”

 

A:   “The weather?”

 

B:   “Yeah.  Like, ‘Do you think it’s going to rain?’

Or ‘It’s really hot today, isn’t it?’  

Things like that.”

 

A:   “The other people don’t think it’s boring?”

 

B:   “Not really.

In fact, a lot of times they are relieved to have something to talk about.

Anything to break the silence, and get the conversation going.”

以下是7月24日使用的教材：

 

Being stuck in the elevator

 

A:   “I can’t believe that we are stuck in this elevator.”

 

B:   “What floor are we on?”

 

A:   “I’m not sure.  I think we may be between the fourth and fifth floors.”

 

B:   “So what should we do? Press the alarm button?”

 

A:   “No, let’s wait.  Here’s a telephone.

We can use this to call the building management people.

They should be able to help.”

 

B:   “I hope so.  I hate being trapped in small spaces.”

 

Rainy day

 

A:   “This rain seems like it will never stop.  It’s so depressing.”

 

B:   “I like rainy days.  Everything looks so clean.”

And, besides, we need the rain.

It’s been a couple weeks and the farmer’s crops are so dry.”

 

A:   “I guess you’re right. I just hope it clears up before the weekend.”

 

B:   “Why, what’s going on this weekend?”

 

A:   “We’re supposed to have a picnic on Saturday afternoon.  On the Battlefield Park grounds, by the river.”

 

B:   “Yeah, that would be a bit muddy.

Well, better have a back-up plan, just in case.”

第3次Mr.Z 语音室练习（2005.7.17 8pm 新浪 UC 外语天地 英语教学）

 

Mr.Z“语音室”的练习活动，目的在具体实践“培养英语口语技能”的讲座中所提到的方法。使用的教材是近期在美国捕捉的真实对话情景，然后经专家整理出来的地道生活美语，让大家有置身美国的感觉。教材中粗体字是建议句子重读的地方。

 

如果各位想得到一个最佳效果的话，请在上课之前，熟读教材内容，该查字典的查字典，该练习好发音的先练习好发音，（尽可能使用我推荐的工具网站，在Mr. Z英语空间主业右侧）。练习时注意运用讲座中提到的方法。

 

根据前两次练习中所看到的情况，我已经感觉到同学们的热情和兴趣。在上周日的练习里我试图让大家在公麦上交互进行交谈，模拟真实情景，结果不是特别顺利。原因可能是有些同学对教材内容不熟悉，听上一位同学发言后，无法跟上。希望透过大家不断的努力，我们能找到一个适合互联网远程教学的语音室练习模式，让网友们能在此愉快地、有效地学习口语。

 

Talking to a travel agent on the phone, making an airline reservation

 

A:   “Hello. This is Jerry Wilson.  I’d like to make a reservation on United to Los Angeles.

I’d like to travel Business Class. 

And I want to travel next Tuesday.”

 

B:   “Yes, we have seats in Business Class on that flight.

Do you want a window seat or aisle?”

 

A:   “Aisle. I like to be able to get up and go to the bathroom.”

 

B:   “OK, you’re all set.  Your e-ticket confirmation number is UA-ZKVHB6.

Don’t forget to check in three hours before departure.”

 

A:   “Great. Thanks for your help.”

 

Sending an express package

 

A:   “I’ve got to get these books to Pittsburgh by tomorrow.”

 

B:   “So send it express mail.”

 

A:   “I don’t have the right envelopes here. I’ll have to go down the street to one of their offices.”

 

B:   “They have a pick-up service.  Just give them a call.”

 

A:   “I wonder how much it’ll cost.”

 

B:   “It shouldn’t be much more than sixteen dollars.”
